I'm originally from Texas: I was born in Austin and raised in a little town in south Texas called McAllen. I majored in Computer Science at the University of Texas, but dropped out after a couple of years - I loved the CS stuff, but had no interest in the rest of it. Mostly I liked the social aspects - meeting people from all over the country - quite an eye-opener after growing up in a small town.

I moved out to California when the Texas economy tanked in '86 (peso devaluation, oil crisis, and silicon down all at once). I sent resumes out to L.A. and Silicon Valley - I got similar responses from both - no brainer: head to Silicon Valley - mecca for nerds. There weren't many jobs at the time, since the industry was tanking at the time, so I ended up doing contract work. I liked that so much that I did it for almost 20 years. It paid well and I got a lot of good experience. But...

But being a contractor is like being a mercenary. The good part is the pay and the cleanliness of the interface: get in - do the job - get out. The downside is that you don't really belong to anything. And being from Texas I'm a fairly communal kind of guy, so I yearned to belong to something. So after a very successful consultant career I crossed the line and became an employee. I worked at Elemental Security (http://www.elementalsecurity.com) for a couple of years and recently joined SixApart as a LiveJournal developer.

I have a couple of daughters from my first wife that live in Fresno (aka Hell). I have a stepson and a foster daughter that live with my current wife and I in San Francisco.
